Dubai Sports Council Organizes Workshop in Coordination with Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing
Scolari Decides Features of Modern Training in Football and Explains Happiness with UAE Youth National Team Dubai Sports Council organized – in coordination with Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing – a workshop for coaches and members of Dubai clubs.
The workshop was lectured by the universal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari – the champion of the world with the Brazilian National Team in the World Cup 2002 and the man of the clear touch with the Portuguese National Team in Euro 2004 & the World Cup 2006. Scolari talked on the most important points in his long & successful working life / provided a summery on his experiences in football along with means of dealing with players & methods to be followed for developing their levels. He also appreciated the performance of the UAE Youth National Team and explained his happiness with this team, since it won the Asian Cup and presented excellent performance in the World Youth Cup.
The workshop was inaugurated by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al-Sharif the Secretary General of the Council who welcomed the Brazilian coach and appreciated his response to DSC’s invitation to meet coaches & members of Dubai’s clubs. He said: “This workshop reflects DSC’s strategy aiming to develop the level of Dubai clubs & sports level of UAE in general so that our teams & champions will be able to attain achievements. The workshop is also part of DSC’s keenness to give Dubai sports clubs chances to acquire experiences and to get benefits from the experiences of international sports persons. In this regard, the Council hosted earlier this month the 4th Dubai International Sports Conference and today the Council is organizing this workshop to enable coaches & members of Dubai clubs to get benefit from the experiences of the coach whose record is full of international achievements”.
In the beginning of the workshop, Scolari made a summery for his training journey in football stating that he has got a Master degree in Sports Education in order to be a coach for his national team “Brazil”. He advised coaches to act in the same way; since a coach should first study the technology & styles of training in details before starting actual work. He also mentioned that the coach should cope with the new changes of the game. He explained that his greatest success is the achievement of the World Cup 2002 with Brazil National Team but he also spent successful years with the Portuguese National Team, with which he attained the second position in the finals of Euro 2004 and fourth position in the World Cup 2006.
Scolari referred that success in football never happen by chance. On the contrary, the matter starts with an opportunity to be given for a person; e.g. a coach may be selected to supervise a team or national team then the coach should select a suitable plan to exploit this opportunity. Finally, the coach should develop himself to attain the planned objectives & achievements. Regarding failure with Chelsea Club, he said that the mentality of Brazilian coaches does not suit with English football style; it was difficult to change the English players’ style and thus he preferred to leave.
Scolari appreciated the UAE Youth National Team which has won the Asian Championship. He expressed that he watched the team’s matches in the world cup and described the players’ performance as excellent. He referred that the successful experience of the Youth National Team should positively influence the first National Team because the UAE youth national team includes some players who are able to be stars in the first national team. In this context, he referred that the coach of the first National Team should give such youth chances to play for the first team.
Scolari added that clubs & national teams will be able to attain success if they pay attention for youth & junior sectors. He advised coaches to focus on developing the skills side of juniors rather than developing their physical side because the physical side can be obtained later while skills should be acquired earlier. Scolari said a player should have a permanent motivation to upgrade his level; e.g. the Brazilian player Rivaldo whose age is 37 years old is still practicing individual exercises and trying to develop his weaknesses, in spite of the fact that he was selected previously as best player in the world and he played for the best world teams.
Scolari mentioned that modern football depends on both physical side (50%) and skills side (50%) while in the past it was mostly depending on the skills side (75%) therefore during the last few years there is no such notable differences between great & small teams; the greatest evidence for this is that Greece won Euro 2004. He expected that most national teams will follow a defending system during the next World Cup in South Africa and they may depend on one or maximum two forward players.
He mentioned that he selected the goalkeeper Ricardo rather than goalkeeper Vitor Paya during the training session of the Portuguese National Team because the later is arrogant and though that he is the owner of the team whereas all parties should recognize that the national team belongs to the whole people of the country. He cautioned that selection of ready players for participating in a match should take place in coordination between the coach / his assistant / goalkeeper coach / fitness coach.
